| Releasing the first injured starling Rambo, back into the wild was a sad and joyous occasion. As he took flight once more and headed back to his own kind, my wife and I knew this was the start of something. I became known as “Terry the Bird Man” and was soon relied upon by the R.S.P.B., Police and individuals to take in and care for those injured birds and wildlife that had nowhere else to go.
Where time allows, I attend schools, hospices and shows to share my experience, raise awareness of the environment and raise funds. This is essential in order to keep the Service going and is only possible due to the help of our young volunteers who are studying for their N.V.Q.s in Animal Care. These volunteers are part of Access Training for young people who are out of work and gives them a valuable insight and experience into working, caring and managing their time.
The cost of food and bedding as well as medication have far exceeded what the charity could bring in and we are now at a critical stage; we too need rescuing. With costs in excess of £1,450 per month, we are struggling and need your help. The following page offers you the opportunity to contribute regularly and I do hope you will take the time to consider helping, thank you.
All the money we receive goes on bedding, food, medicine and shelter for injured and orphaned birds and animals; we never say no to any creature. The biggest heartache is the fear that we will not be able to help. From swans that are left unable to fly after vicious attacks by dogs, to starlings that have been injured and need to rest and be nourished and orphaned creatures left to fend for themselves, we take them all in.
The hoots and songs that come from the hotch potch of various home-made sheds and hutches are a testament to the need for this service and a chorus that delights us every day. We tend to think of ourselves as the N.H.S. of the wild, our feathered and furry patients couldn’t live without us. |
